Eddie’s Attic: My March Visit

2011 March 30

For a more in-depth article on Eddie’s Attic, check out my post from February by clicking this link: http://coreydurkin.com/eddies-attic-open-mic-night-on-valentines-day

The nice part about my March visit to Eddie’s Attic was that the music did not go until 4am. Last time, the place was jam-packed with 27 performers and this time, there were only 20.

The Bergamont, a male-female folk duo from Chicago (very Sam & Ruby-esque) started the night off with two AWESOME songs. I can’t remember the title of the first song but their lyric “we’re gonna go down on that rocky mountain side and finish all the words to this song” stayed with me. The second was a new one they had recently written called “Candy Wrapper.” I couldn’t find them after the shindig but had I done so, I would have purchased their CD and when I get on a normal internet connection tonight, I am going to buy the heck out of their record on iTunes. You can find them at http://www.thebergamot.com/

A local dude from Atlanta named Matt Vaughan started his set off with a song called “She’s Got That Way” which is a REALLY cute song. Check that song out on his MySpace which, by the way, I can barely navigate because it has changed SO much since its glory days. http://www.myspace.com/563141689

Two self-described “hicks” from Georgia, replete with suspenders, torn jeans and straw fedoras, tore the stage up! Very country but they put so much emotion into their performance that it sounded more like rock to me. They’re not online yet because, in the words of one of the lads, “all that internet stuff is so confusing” but I hope to run into them again sometime.

The night got shaken up in a great way by a Georgia-based rap group called Tragedy Called Truth. Arkkade Kult, the front man and rapper for the group had some incredibly fierce emotion and he completely electrified the small listening room. One thing I really liked about their music was the fact that, unlike a lot of today’s hip-hop, Arkkade had very deep lyrics. I didn’t hear one mention of how many diamonds he had in his teeth. Check them out at http://tragedycalledtruth.com/

And last but not least, my man Tony Memmel performed with his lovely wife Lesleigh. He’s a great dude, intriguing voice and killer lyrics. Here’s his music video for “Lord Knows We’ve Got Time.”

Tony’s currently on tour so check out his website and tour dates here: http://tonymemmel.com/wp/?page_id=2
